Mexico Sweden match preview

Before the last round, everything is still open in group F and all four teams can qualify for the round of sixteen, but not all are in the same situation and the most advantageous is Mexico, which has made two wins and is in the first place, while Sweden once won and once lost. The Mexicans are therefore in the best position and even with a draw, they are surely first in the group, but could be eliminated in case they lose. Sweden, on the other hand, has to win after receiving a goal in the last moments of the match against Germany, though the Swedes could also pass with a draw. In a friendly match in 2009, Sweden defeated Mexico with 1-0.

Mexico

The Mexicans are apparently in a great position, because they practically could not do better in the first two rounds, given that they made two triumphs, but it is still not enough and they had to play this third duel with the maximum seriousness. They made the best job in the first round when they mastered Germany and thus traced their way to the round of sixteen, in one really great football match. They have taken full advantage of all the weaknesses of current world champions, scored one goal and kept their net intact, the truth with a little luck in the finish. They expected it to be much easier in the second round against South Korea, but it was not that bad and they had to struggle a lot to overcome an unpleasant opponent with 2-1.

They took the lead in the middle of the first half, and they doubled the lead in the middle of the second half, and only then could they relax a little bit, although their opponent had its opportunities. The only goal that Mexico received was in the injury time and this has spoiled the overall impression, but they could be very happy that the match ended with 2-1. It was not expected that coach Osorio would after a triumph against Germany change something in the team, but center-back Ayala still ended up on the bench and Salcedo played in that position while Alvarez jumped in instead. We are not expecting any change now, though Osorio may surprise us with some new name.

Probable lineups Mexico: Ochoa – Alvarez, Salcedo, Moreno, Gallardo – Herrera – Guardado, Layun, Vela, Lozano – Chicharito

Sweden

Sweden is one of the biggest disappointments of this World Cup, considering the way they lost in the second round against Germany. In the first round they played against South Korea and they were valid for big favourites, which they justified on the field, though they only won with 1-0 and the goal from a penalty. However, they were a better team on the field and they deserved a more convincing victory, which could be decisive, but it remained 1-0 and they had a match against Germany after that. The current world champions were under tremendous pressure and made it difficult for the Swedes, but they were also aware that this duel could bring them placement in the round of sixteen and they were set very well in the first part and took a lead with a nice goal by Toivonen.

After that, they started to play badly and they immediately received a goal, but afterwards they resisted and it seemed they have a draw in their hands, which would bring them close to the round of sixteen. Still, they did not withstand the pressure and they received another goal in the 5th minute of the injury time, when they had more players on the field, so the situation is now very complicated, followed by a new heavy duel with a very good opponent. They should not lose this time, and a draw is probably not enough, so it is clear they have to look for a victory. Center-back Lindelof has returned in the team and he played against Germany, which was good news, and it was the only change in the composition, given that midfielder Larsson recovered and was ready for the match. We do not expect any changes now because the team that played in the last round was objectively the best that the Swedes had.

Probable lineups Sweden: Olsen – Lustig, Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson – Larsson, Ekdal, Claesson, Forsberg – Berg, Toivonen

Verdict:

It can be said for both teams that they played very well in the first two rounds, but none of them have secured the finals and it is very likely that one of these rivals will be eliminated. However, Mexico has shown something more and one point is enough for them in this match, while Sweden need a triumph, which will be very hard to achieve.
