This week we are going to find out all quarter-finalists of the Champions League after four remaining 2nd leg matches of the round of 16 finish. One of more interesting duels in this one where Italian Roma will try at its Olimpico stadium to revenge to Ukrainian Shakhtar for defeat 2-1 suffered in Kharkov. That was fourth Shakhtar’s victory in their head-to-head, while Roma won just one such match.

AS Roma

Roma fans believe the time has come for triumph of their team over the team from Donetsk, which doesn’t have to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, depending of outcome of the 2nd leg. Roma would qualify for the next round if it wins by 1-0 or by any other result with minimal two-goal difference, given that the first match between the two teams played in Kharkov ended as Shakhtar’s victory 2-1, despite that Roma had a lead at the halftime of 1-0.

However, at the beginning of second half the home team kicked into higher gear and scored two goals in quick succession, so before the 2nd leg at the Olimpico stadium Roma has minus of one goal. After the match in Kharkov Roma lost at home to Milan 2-0 in the Serie A and then won away Napoli 4-1. Last weekend it won Torino 3-0 at home. Let’s add that the second match with Shakhtar will skip only one player, defender Karsdorp who is injured.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Unlike Roma, which plays variably recently, reigning champions of Ukraine won all five official matches played so far this year, four in the Ukrainian championship and one against Roma 2-1 in the Champions League. Atmosphere in their locker room is excellent before coming to Rome, although they are well aware that on Tuesday evening their task will be much harder than it was in Kharkov, especially as this is the first match this season that they will play outside Ukraine.

It could be seen in the group phase of the Champions League that Shakhtar plays much better at home than away. Now, the Ukrainians will face team that scored even seven goals in last two league matches, and their defence will be quite certainly thoroughly tested from the very beginning of match. Let’s add that out of action are injured stopper Kryvtsov and midfielder Malyshev, and suspended defender Srna.

Verdict:

Just like the Ukrainians used the home-field advantage in the 1st leg and won 2-1 we expect that Roma does something similar now at its Olimpico stadium, although it is questionable will whatever Roma do be sufficient to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
