Monaco Lyon match preview

New season in the French Ligue 1 starts Monaco, which ended up at the 17th place last year, and Lyon, which won the third place. Each team won their head-to-head played at home, Monaco won by 2-0 in February, and Lyon by 3-0 in December last year.

AS Monaco

Monaco is the only club in that managed to win the title of French champion seven previous seasons except PSG, which has won six titles. It happened in season 2016/17 but last year they barely save themselves from relegation. After a catastrophically poor start and replacement of managers and players, they finished at the 17th place having won 36 points, two points more than the 18th placed team. Dijon avoided the relegation play-off and was very active during the summer transfer window.

The brought two last players from Montpellier; goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte and right back Ruben Aguilar, but with them they haven’t closed their wish list. Allegedly they also want Edin Dzeko from Roma, and there is a rumour that M interested for Baghdad Bounedjah and Andrea Silva. Geubbels, Jovetic, Pellegrini, Subasic and Appin are injured right now. During the preparation period Monaco played well and out of last four matches they won three and drew one match. In the last match they won Sampdoria 1-0.

Probable lineups Monaco: Lecomte- Aguilar, Glik, Panzo, Ballo Toure- Heinrichs, Fabregas, Jemerson, Lopes- Foster, Martins

Olympique Lyon

Lyon won the third place last season and with that fulfilled objective to directly qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, but they had 19 points fewer than champion PSG, and three less than runner-up Lille. Despite this, manager Bruno Gensiou was replaced by Brazilian Sylvinho. Club legend Juninho is back in role of the sports director. Lyon didn’t make too many changes to the team but, among others, they have managed to bring Youssouf Kone and Thiago Mendes from Lille.

Lyon lost in the preparatory period to Servette from Switzerland 1-2, Genoa 3-4, Liverpool 1-3 and in the last match to Bournemouth 0-3. They won only Arsenal at the Emirates Cup by 2-1; they trailed behind in the first half, but Dembele scored two goals and they won the trophy. Lyon has no problem with injuries for this match.

Probable lineups Lyon: Lopes- Dubois, Andersen, Denayer, Kone- Thiago Mendes, Aouar- Cornet, Depay, Dembele.

Verdict:

Monaco played better in the preparatory period and it won last two league matches with Lyon at home, which won the last time in Monaco in January 2018 in the French Cup. Lyon won the last time as guest in Monaco in December 2016. Our forecast is victory of the home team.
